headspace for running

How do you motivate yourself to get out the door and run?

What do you think about when you're running?

What keeps you going?

Given my dodgy (and somewhat lazy) running history, I'm trying to organise my brain better. I'm a bit of a wimp - much better at creating running plan spreadsheets and listening to episodes of the Marathon Talk podcast than actually putting in the miles.

Whoa, this brings back memories!


Last week's run: 1.6 miles
This week: 2.4 miles

It's not huge, but it's a start. The problems will come when I up the mileage. It's hard enough to fit in a run around work, eating and sleeping, without my lazy brain putting it off for another day...

So far, I'm not letting myself write any training plans. I'm deciding the day before I run that I'm going to do it, then plan out how I'll fit it around getting home from work, dinner, etc. during the day. I figure that if I tell myself enough times that I'm going to run that night, then it's more likely to happen!

Out on the run, I'm working on blocking off non-running trains of thought (especially those related to work!), and simply to focus on running and running well.



So, what do you do to make it work? Are you hugely more commited than me? Or do you struggle in the same way?!

My biggest motivation is just to get out the door and get some quiet time!

Hi Christy, and thanks for the advice - I have had times when I've really enjoyed running, but there are sometimes when I just can't persuade myself out the door! Hopefully, the more I run, the more I'll enjoy it and the more likely I am to go out again. Hopefully...

Hi Karen! I'm starting to get that "high" after running, which is pretty motivating. Just need to feel it a bit more during the run :)
